Unbound: How Inequality Constricts Our Economy and What We Can Do about It
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
Do we have to choose between equality and prosperity? Many think that reducing economic inequality would require such heavy-handed interference with market forces that it would stifle economic growth. Heather Boushey insists nothing could be further from the truth. Presenting cutting-edge economics with journalistic verve, she shows how rising inequality has become a drag on growth and an impediment to a competitive United States marketplace for employers and employees alike.
Boushey argues that inequality undermines growth in three ways. It obstructs the supply of talent, ideas, and capital as wealthy families monopolize the best educational, social, and economic opportunities. It also subverts private competition and public investment. Powerful corporations muscle competitors out of business, in the process costing consumers, suppressing wages, and hobbling innovation, while governments underfund key public goods that make the American Dream possible, from schools to transportation infrastructure to information and communication technology networks. Finally, it distorts consumer demand as stagnant wages and meager workplace benefits rob ordinary people of buying power and pushes the economy toward financial instability.
Unbound exposes deep problems in the US economy, but its conclusion is optimistic.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified Purchasethis book inspires my research about inclusive growth in China. And I have met the author during the AEA conference. It's a little pitty that I am not dare to ask for a signature from her. haha
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2019Format: HardcoverHeather Boushey’s Unbound offers a compelling discourse about the shifting paradigm of economic thought that breaks away from Adam Smith’s long-held notion that a rising tide lifts all boats and brings us to a new and better supported proposition that an equality of income distribution plays a more significant role in higher productivity and economic stability. Unbound draws from new scientific evidence to argue and substantiate that inequality constricts economies and holds back innovation and that there are better ways to strengthen our democracy.
Dr. Boushey has laid out her case clearly and cogently and helped me to better understand new economic models that give me hope for our nation. Especially in light of the upcoming 2020 elections and what’s at stake in them, Unbound is a must read!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2019Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI am a retired Aerospace Engineer and small business man. I bought this book for two reasons, I. I have just finished Ester Duflo's on line course on Poverty and 2. I am of French Canadian heritage and my family name is Boucher, not the
Anglicized version Boushey. The first 90 pages contain hundreds and hundreds of name droppings and references. Where is her work??????? At last in the last three chapters she develop some opinions. Originally I had intended to donate my copy to the Santa Monica library but I have marked up and highlighted most pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important fresh perspective
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseUnbound offers a fresh perspective for thinking about how we understand the most challenging economic issues we face today and the ways in which policy makers might approach them differently. The book is sometimes a little shallow in terms of detail for me personally (I work in a related field) but I understand that for a general audience this is probably ideal. A very good book and definitely worth reading and thinking about.
