Battling the Big Lie: How Fox, Facebook, and the Maga Media Are Destroying America Audio CD – Unabridged, June 7, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
In BATTLING THE BIG LIE, bestselling author Dan Pfeiffer returns to lay out how the Right Wing built such a robust and successful disinformation machine, how they have used it to amass power despite representing a dwindling share of the country, and how readers can fight back against disinformation with step-by-step guides on spotting fake news, becoming their own fact checker, and talking to their conspiracy theory-obsessed relatives.
Over the last twenty years, the Right Wing has built a massive media apparatus that is weaponizing misinformation for political purposes. The Right Wing media ecosystem personified by Fox and fueled by Facebook is waging war on the very idea of objective truth—and it’s winning. This misinformation campaign is at the root of much that is rotten in America and around the world. Trump is a product of this eco-system as is the immense polarization and division and our inability to deal rationally with immense threats like COVID and Climate Change.
Here, Pfeiffer lays bare the tactics used by the Right Wing propaganda machine and how to combat them, including:
- QAnon and its proponents, from Facebook groups to members of congress
- The optimization of Facebook as the ultimate carrier of Right Wing clickbait
- Educating the Left to "fight fire with fire" and nurture progressive media
- How to have hard conversations with the Fox News-watching, conspiracy theory-believing relative in your life

A really good read and I highly recommend it.
Pfeiffer’s basic thesis is that a decade ago, Democrats were winning the digital game, but they made a fundamental miscalculation. They spent all their energy honing the content of their messaging, and then attempted to deliver it by influencing the coverage of traditional media outlets. This doesn’t work because traditional media has no interest in passing along an unfiltered version of the Democratic message. The press needs to attract eyeballs, and the best way to do that is to feature conflict and setbacks.
In a tortured but apt analogy, Pfeiffer compares the Dem’s strategy to trying to distribute chocolate cookies, but only being able to do it through an anchovy distributor. Having its own agenda, the anchovy distributor puts an anchovy on each chocolate cookie before sending it out. He also sees the traditional media as focused on a lazy and specious form of objectivity that involves comparing unequal and unlinkable activities. Instead they should be focused on improving their credibility by stating honest and obvious truths about what each side is trying to accomplish.
By contrast, the Republicans have a seamless delivery system, no matter how nutty or mendacious the content might be. Their propaganda goes basically unfiltered right to the base, which uses social media to pass it along to their contacts (Your crazy uncle on Facebook syndrome). This well-funded, well-oiled machine amplifies conservative talking points and creates a bubble that opposing messages can’t penetrate.
According to Pfeiffer, the Democrats are at a disadvantage in the info wars because they still cling to fact based analysis, and they’re willing to tussle among themselves over policy and strategy. He doesn’t advocate moving away from those propensities, but he does believe Democrats need their own online content battalion to get information to the base unmediated by the press. The soldiers in that battalion are grassroots political activists.
He sees signs of hope in current digital initiatives, but acknowledges that Democrats are far behind the Republicans in delivering effective messaging to their voters. He wrote this book because he knows, as many do, that something has to change, fast, before it’s too late. Give him credit for this well-timed wake up call.
When I first started reading what some of the MAGA people wrote in the comment sections, I often asked myself, “Can these people actually believe what they’re saying, or are they just trying to win an argument or ‘own a lib?’ How could they really, truly, believe this nonsense?
Dan Pfeiffer answers these questions, and I had no idea how long it has been going on, how much work went into it, and how interconnected it is.
direct as to the manner that has brought us the US to this division point in our
History. Everyone with a clear understanding of the Truth should read this Now!
