Most of them are directed at large organizations.
In the short time I spent as an employee of others, I never worked in a business with more than 100 or so employees.
I am a small business guy, a person most comfortable working by myself or with small staffs. The largest company I ever owned grew to about 50 employees and came perilously close to driving me nuts.
However, my reading has given me, I think, into the issues faced by managers in large organizations.
“Fit for Growth” addresses the issue of cutting costs without damaging the core of the organization.
In short, the author’s focus is on identifying and eliminating non-producing assets of every kind, creating a truly leaner and more productive organization as the result.
It’s an excellent book, well written and laden with solid advice. While most useful to senior management in larger organizations, the advice is still somewhat useful in smaller businesses.

Strategies, specific examples and hands-on advice show how spending aligned with strategy allows businesses to stay competitive. Real life examples at companies like IKEA, Circuit City, P&G bring to life the three elements of the Fit for Growth framework—focus on a few differentiating capabilities, align cost structure, and reorganize for growth. First read provided plenty of food for thought and I know it will be a great resource for years to come.
