The curse placed on Oedipus lingers and haunts a younger generation in this new and brilliant translation of Sophocles' classic drama. The daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta, Antigone is an unconventional heroine who pits her beliefs against the King of Thebes in a bloody test of wills that leaves few unharmed. Emotions fly as she challenges the king for the right to bury her own brother. Determined but doomed, Antigone shows her inner strength throughout the play.

Antigone raises issues of law and morality that are just as relevant today as they were more than two thousand years ago. Whether this is your first reading or your twentieth, Antigone will move you as few pieces of literature can.

To make this quintessential Greek drama more accessible to the modern reader, the Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Classics edition of Antigone includes a glossary of difficult terms, a list of vocabulary words, and convenient sidebar notes.

When a Woman Shields Her Family
5 Stars
When a Woman Shields Her Family
“…We therefore commit this body to the ground, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life”—words that are supposed to put a peaceful end to our physical life. But Antigone’s non-conformist brother is deprived of the right to this peaceful end.“Antigone” is the story of a brave woman who buries the body of her brother against the decision of her uncle, the ruler of Thebes. Antigone, whose revealing name shows her nonconformism (Antigone = of opposing opinion), is the braver of Oedipus’s daughters who stays with Oedipus after he is banned from Thebes. This Athenian tragedy may symbolize the real tragic death of those who stand against a ruling system and their family is deprived of the right of burying their loved ones. History repeats itself.

I used this book for a school project this book came the same day and was so fast I definitely enjoyed the book overall this is pretty good.

The book (or play) is coupled with contextual information about the time period and was very enlightening and an enjoyable read. The play although set in the Classical time period of Greece, depicts many values and beliefs that are present in today's modern society.
Sophocles critiques ideas of civic pride, government, gender roles in society, and questions the viewer what is right? I'm glad I was assigned to read this, and this particular illustration was very good!

Was perfect for helping me pass a class and was easy to follow along.

I ordered multiple copies for a book discussion group. Having all the same versions was a blessing for our ability to select sections for oral presentation. The book was nicely printed, easy to follow and move past sections that we wouldn't have time for in our limited meeting arrangements. The Glossary was extremely helpful, since a number of the participants are older women and claim to have forgotten a lot of the details about Greek myths that we learned many years ago.

Whether you are considering the book to refresh your memories of Antigone or to read it for the first time, this is a good edition, and I recommend it highly.

Just started on this. I always get the reading list from my Jr and Sr high grandchildren so that I can read also. It gives us common basis of discussion. I wasn't excited over reading this but I am already hooked.
