Thucydides called his account of two decades of war between Athens and Sparta “a possession for all time,” and indeed it is the first and still the most famous work in the Western historical tradition.

Considered essential reading for generals, statesmen, and liberally educated citizens for more than 2,000 years,
The Peloponnesian War is a mine of military, moral, political, and philosophical wisdom.

However, this classic book has long presented obstacles to the uninitiated reader. Written centuries before the rise of modern historiography, Thucydides' narrative is not continuous or linear. His authoritative chronicle of what he considered the greatest war of all time is rigorous and meticulous, yet omits the many aids to comprehension modern readers take for granted—such as brief biographies of the story's main characters, maps and other visual enhancements, and background on the military, cultural, and political traditions of ancient Greece.

Robert Strassler's new edition amends these omissions, and not only provides a new coherence to the narrative overall but effectively reconstructs the lost cultural context that Thucydides shared with his original audience. Based on the venerable Richard Crawley translation, updated and revised for modern readers,
The Landmark Thucydides includes a vast array of superbly designed and presented maps, brief informative appendices by outstanding classical scholars on subjects of special relevance to the text, explanatory marginal notes on each page, an index of unprecedented subtlety and depth, and numerous other useful features. Readers will find that with this edition they can dip into the text at any point and be immediately oriented with regard to the geography, season, date, and stage of the conflict.

In any list of the Great Books of Western Civilization,
The Peloponnesian War stands near the top. This handsome, elegant, and authoritative new edition will ensure that its greatness is appreciated by future generations.

This is the BEST version of this classic history by thucydides that i ve come across, thanks to the maps and the short summary on the side of the text which make the story easier to follow. As a Greek, I can’t believe that I had to read this history book in English to deeply follow and understand the history and the plot.

The Landmark Series is superb and contains many added maps, diagrams, timelines and mini-biographies of key historical players. Sadly, the chronicle of the Peloponnesian Wars, in which Thucydides fought, ends abruptly with the historian's untimely death. A more or less seamless continuation of recorded events and their aftermath can be found in a companion Landmark volume, Hellenika by Xenophon. abh

Thucydides understood the importance of the events he both witnessed and took part in and for that reason he understood why others should know about them. It is quite remarkable to think that twenty-five hundred years later, Thucydides's account of the Peloponnesian War is still being widely read. But I suppose that's natural considering his account provides so much of the fairly limited evidence we have of the events of that tragic period. We can be thankful for his foresight and appreciation of educating those of us who came much later.

Strassler has put together a very accessible book on studying both Thucydides's own account (the most valuable part of the book) as well as adding to it with maps of the areas in question, notes, and appendices following the text that help illuminate some of the military, political, some social and economic aspects of the Greek world. Thucydides's account covers mainly the military side of the twenty-seven year long conflict known as the Peloponnesian War, although his account ends in 411 BC, some seven years before Athens's ultimate defeat. But his narrative gives us at least some important glimpses of other aspects of life in the Hellenic world at that time, though precious little especially on the social side.

There is so much to learn in this narrative, despite the horrendous conflict that engulfed nearly twenty-seven years between the two chief city-states, Athens and her allies versus Sparta and her allies. We learn very little of the author; he seems to believe that his part is very minor compared to everything else that occurred and therefore is not worth discussing. As others have noted, he seems not to have had a profound religious side, at least it seems the notions of oracles and omens and the likes aren't as widely discussed as others have written, e.g. Herodotus's Histories. The author displays a fairly balanced view of the conflict, though he was an Athenian.

The speeches that he includes are quite remarkable, though you have to doubt the veracity of all of these in terms of word for word accuracy, maybe some were conjured, but who can say for sure, we weren't there. It seems hard to find fault with his careful examination of events and his efforts to provide a fairly accurate account of that tragic war. He was a participant, and like any writer of history, is influenced by his own prejudices and his own experiences, to some extent at least. Without his account we would know far less.

There are many memorable and very human episodes that will strike you in this account, such as the effects of the Plague on Athens's population, the oratory of Pericles, the Athenian disaster at Sicily, the civil strife erupting between people who shared the same homeland, and so forth. You'll learn of the growth of the Athenian empire and the problems possessing an empire can lead to, the nature of the Spartan military, the strategies and battles fought, public leaders like Pericles, Hermocrates, Nicias, Cleon, Brasidas, Alcibiades and so many others.

Accounts like Thucydides's prove that human nature doesn't really change that much, despite all the evident technological, political, economic and cultural changes that have occurred, we still possess the same strengths and weaknesses innate to human nature from time immemorial. This account is invaluable and this edition by Strassler makes it imminently accessible. A true classic.

There are so many reviews of this that I want to only add a few points that I don't think get the attention that they deserve.

Thucydides' history of the Peloponnesian War is undoubtedly one of the great classics of literature. By setting a standard for others to follow, it has contributed to our understanding of ourselves far in excess to its military and political account of a particular war. As such, it's hardly a wonder that it continues to generate such enthusiasm millennia later. And as an American, I find it not only brilliant but -- in a good way -- incredibly painful to read.

Very few books make me physical ill to read, but this is one. It's hard not to identify with the Athenians for their democratic ideals, in a way that I can't identify with anyone else before the British colonization of North America, but man, does it hurt to read about their brutality and horrific mistakes. The Syracuse campaign is an agonizing read, very similar to the first book you read on the Holocaust.

But it also therapeutic, as my own political engagement is often at the mercy of the kinds of `ailments of democracy' that Thucydides describes. It helps me keep a balanced view toward those who might otherwise drive me up the wall, as I can put their actions into the context of two thousand years.

Now, the question is, is this the translation to read? There's a lot to be said for the Landmark, which the other reviews describe. What they say is mostly accurate. I would add, however, that the footnotes, which are written under the assumption that you haven't read previous chapters, are repetitive (literally word for word) or about geography in a way that isn't that helpful (as there's usually a map at hand that can be looked at just as quickly and with greater reward). And what would have been very, very helpful but is missing is direction arrows on the map that give a sense of chronology. Most of the maps simply show the location of cities and occasionally battlefields. Only a handful have arrows showing movements of fleets or such. More of the like would have been a godsend as Thucydides is an onslaught of proper names and he does describe battles in great detail and it would visualize everything if the maps retold the story. Also, I wish that the editors had taken a few more liberties with the nineteenth-century translation. For instance, the text uses the term `corn' when talking about grains. This is horribly confusing to Americans, who are probably the main audience of this new edition and who envision maize when they read `corn', which couldn't possibly be what Thucydides meant as maize was unknown to Europeans before they began exploring the Americas.

And in defense of this book, I see that the negative reviews concentrate on how the paperback falls apart. A bookseller sent me a used paperback by mistake. It had clearly been through a lot and it suffered through my reading it as well. But it's still hanging together. Perhaps the publisher got their act together after getting so many criticisms. I would, however, seriously consider hunting down a hardback because this is one of those grand books that you'll want to keep.

Incidentally, the US Army Center of Military History has this edition on its list of 'Recommended Professional Reading' for senior leaders (brigade and above) with the comment "It should be in every soldier or diplomat's bookshelf."

It's a heavy read, but if you want a raw glimpse into the sophisticated might-makes-right world of early civilization this is it. This book demonstrates glaringly that our ancestors were highly intelligent, pragmatic, self-aware, and ruthless. The politicians were cunning and eloquent. This is a true Epic: The All Powerful Athens vs The Relentless Spartans - lots of great naval battles, sieges, alliances, betrayals, heroes, and political speeches described in amazing detail (sometimes too much detail!). One of my favourite books of all time, but also hard to read: this was a truly nasty war.
