DNF @ 8%

I was looking forward to this one so much, this DNF really hurts. First off, I'm not a huge fan of the the POV being the main character telling us what happened as if they are talking from the future. This story telling technique doesn't always work for me.
And... my thoughts from 6%: Okay, so pity party and explaining the ex-husband and then even more bitching about her BFF Sloan, honest the God I haven’t heard one good think about her friend.... and now we are gonna have to listen to this dudes music forever aren’t we.....

I ended up not liking her, not caring about her, and disliking her best friend too. Things seemed to just draaaaag on. It felt like I was reading this one for so long, yet I only got two chapters in :(

"With salt in air and water in veins
I call the pale rider to loosen his reins
I call for death to loosen his chains
I call for air to return to the breast
I call for fire to ignite the rest
Let what was earthside return once more
Restart the clock, and settle the score
Reanimate the dead flesh of man
Render Phillip Deville alive again."

11-03: When I happened across the synopsis for 'Dead Rockstar' by Lillah Lawson, it just seemed like a rather unique premise and though it didn't necessarily seem like the kind of title I'd typically read.. I was fascinated by the concept.

The novel is about a young woman named Stormy who has had a pretty rough life overall and when we meet her at the opening, she's still spiraling ever downward. She's divorced and living in a rundown trailer out in an isolated part of the town, she's really just barely making it and she's got one good friend to help her stay sane, Sloan.

After getting lucky and finding an old copy of a super rare vinyl record from her favorite band.. the Bloomer Demons, a group she has lived for since she was just a teen, Stormy digs out a set of lines.. buried in the album cover artwork and as a 'joke' she attempts the impossible. She tries to resurrect the long dead rockstar and sexy, enigmatic lead singer.. Phillip Deville.

Answering a knock on her door a day later, she finds herself staring into the turquoise eyes of the beautiful undead rock god himself. But the act has put other things in motion too and in order to keep herself and her newly resurrected boyfriend safe, she's going to have to go to battle for them both.

"This isn't a new style."
"This is the same shit grunge kids were wearing when I was alive in the 90s. The only difference is instead of JNCOs the jeans have skinny legs, but otherwise it's the same."

Honestly, in the first few pages.. I thought the writing was really light-hearted and almost simplistic. But as I continued to read my perspective evolved and it began to seem more like a representation of the life Stormy was leading. She's a small town girl living a small restricted life and she feels like she's adrift. Her loneliness is not raging and loud.. it's not that kind of.. fill the void cacophony that her best friend exhibits. It's muted.. filled with anguish and the quiet fracturing of a soul.

Once Phillip shows up, all that begins to change. The texture of the story seems to almost adapt with the highs and lows of the characters. He's the kind of tortured artist that draws us in.. with his carefully crafted outer image and his fragile, loyal heart.

This story just resonated with me on so many levels. Growing up as I did.. I was in high school around the same time as the main character.. going to see the same bands she was listening to and already living and working in the industry. Nearly every legitimate performer mentioned in the book is someone I knew or met along the way and subtracting the obvious supernatural elements and the plot, the story could have been pulled from the pages of my own lifestyle.. which made it really grounding for me.

"I was almost at the dunes that mark the entrance of the trail, and I turned one more time to look at the water. I've always liked the way it churns during a storm, bringing all the debris onto the shore, all dark and frothy."
"Like a purging," Phillip said thoughtfully.

So many of my friends from major late 80's-early 90's groups were lost in similar ways to those in the book. Some of them are still falling from those proverbial pillars. There's nothing like discovering they come to their broken ends in the news. The pain on display felt so familiar it was jarring.. but moving.. and I found myself deeply invested in the future of these two people.

It's a roller coaster ride of emotions and a whirlwind of events to follow with both Phillip and Stormy trying to do everything in their power to protect one another against odds the likes of which they have no real understanding. There are some surprises which you may figure out as they get close to conclusion, but in no way are they laid out early and I love the way the author invoked certain familiar elements, such as one from a particularly legendary story.

Do yourself a favor.. if you like music.. love stories.. and some serious underdog appeal.. pick this book up and give it a read. You won't regret it.

Overall 4 out of 5 stars
Performance 4 out of 5 stars
Story 4 out of 5 stars

resurrection, bonds, love, loss, sacrifice

Let me start off with this one got my attention with the cover then the title. Then after that it was the blurb. I wanted to check this one out and see how Stormy get herself out of the mess she created. The opportunities, the changes, the revelations, the trust in herself, the sacrifice. Well I was not expecting all that. I very much enjoyed my introduction to Lilah Lawson. I also enjoyed the variety that narrator Danielle Joy Foley provided. I was able to follow along with no confusion in which gender or character. Thank you.

This. Book. Has. EVERYTHING! It's fun, sexy, spooky, and hilarious. The setting (in beachy South Georgia) is new and exciting. I love Stormy, I love Philip, I love the Bloomer Demons, and I LOVE THIS BOOK! Truly one of my favorites. If you're a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse books, I think you'll really enjoy this series. Keep an eye out for the next book in the series!

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book but it was an interesting romp into magic, celebrity and one woman's fantasy coming back to life. If you were ever a teenager in love with a rock star, or really any celebrity who died, this is the book for you! The characters were passionate and the writing style flowed easily. My only issue was the book really got rolling near the end and I was curious to see where it would go after. Since there is a next in the series I imagine a lot of those questions will be answered!

Overall I enjoyed this book and it was a fun read. It took me a while to get through because at times it seemed to drag on and I’m the type of person that won’t leave a book unfinished. The only part that really bothered me was the fact that the main character just constantly brought up that he was a rockstar and that she was a fan girl, like girl we get it, move on please.

There’s something about reading urban fantasy, whether contained of romance or not, that fascinates me. I think it’s to do with the intersection of magic and real life. The world is full of stories, full of live to be lived, and adding magic—be that in the form of witchcraft, shifters, dragons, vampires, whatever—just makes things a little more wonderful. So when I got the chance to read Lillah Lawson’s Dead Rockstar, a dark, paranormal romance set in Georgia, I was thrilled.

1. Thoughts on the plot
The premise of this plot is that Stormy Spooner performs a spell to bring back her favourite rockstar, Phillip Deville, some twenty-odd years after his death. She doesn’t actually expect it to work, and when it does, she has to deal with an undead rockstar coming to terms with life again, people following after them, and trying not to get into trouble now she’s a necromancer.
This plot started off relatively simple, with a character whose life was falling to pieces, and a late night summoning that only the main character and her friend didn’t believe would work. So far, I’m enjoying myself quite a bit. But when things become real, with real problems, real emotional conflict, as well as magical, that’s when this story really kicked into gear. I think the plot was fascinating, and it definitely did not follow the road that I expected, which was a bonus. This book, for all its magic and mayhem, though, is really about the characters.

2. Thoughts on the characters
Stormy Spooner is an absolutely fantastic main character. She’s capable, snarky, and is dealing with situations that feel very real to me, even if I haven’t personally experienced them. Her relationship with her best friend Sloan seems a little strange at first, but it really works for them and for the story. Stormy isn’t presented as someone who has a perfect life, or will have a perfect life as soon as other people get out of her way and stop holding her back. She is real, has real flaws, and is an absolutely wonderful narrator. Not to mention she takes all this necromancer stuff in stride, considering she doesn’t believe in any of it.
Phillip Deville, too, feels real, which is impressive considering he’s an undead rockstar. He has struggles with coming back to life and dealing with his old life. He would be a really difficult character to like if he weren’t such a teddy bear when it comes to Stormy, actually acting as her friend rather than just a potential romantic interest. It is fun to witness his journey into his new life alongside Stormy, especially when things go a bit wonky.

3. Favourite part
It’s hard to choose one favourite, since this novel has so many nuggets of interest sprinkled throughout. I think the tiny details really make this book what it is. The bit with Phillip and tea, the discussion of songs, the conversations about and over food. All of these things come together to create an immersive world that is more than just story.
Basically, I can’t choose a favourite, I like it all.

4. Critique
My only critique is the ending. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the ending. But I want more! (I read that there will be a sequel, so this point may be moot.)

Overall, Dead Rockstar exceeded my expectations in every way. The characters are great, the story is quirky and unexpected and fun to read, the drama is perfect, and I liked all the little details. If you’re interested in paranormal romance with undead rockstars, amateur necromancers and the potential for huge amounts of trouble, then this is an excellent book to read.

Overall this was a very enjoyable book!
My Likes:
* The mystery aspect of this story. I wasn't expecting to have a mystery/thriller sub plot to this book, but was super pleasantly surprised when it started to develop. It took a direction that I didn't expect and I was 100% there for it!
* Phillip. I thought Phillip was a super intriguing character. His backstory was unexpected and I love that he was such a giving and caring individual. He was a highlight for sure!
* The overall writing style. I really enjoyed Mrs (Ms.?) Lawkson's writing style. It was descriptive and really set the scene. She has great pacing and knew just when and how to move the story along. That is a big plus in my book, because sometimes a book can drag when an author doesn't know how to move the story to the next event and how to use language to its best effect to set the stage.
* Stormy. Stormy started out as a character I didn't really like, if you can believe it, but the reason she is in my likes is because of her growth through out the novel. The more I got to know Stormy the more I liked her. She was a complex character and I enjoyed going on the journey with her.
My Dislikes:
* The portrayal of female friendships. The relationship between Stormy and Sloan was a huge no for me. Not only were they constantly name calling and putting each other down, but they really didn't take care of one another like true friends would. I understand why the author went this direction but . I wish there had been other female friendships that balanced it out and that weren't so toxic.
* Under developed plot points. While we did get answers to most of our main questions there were a few things that were under developed. I would have liked to have delved further into Phillip's backstory. Had more history about his death and the lead up to it. Explored his thoughts around being back and what that meant and when his lack of enjoyment started to set in etc. I would also have liked further development into the magic aspect of this book. How does this work? How did Guthrie know about Stormy? What was his real motive for wanting her magic? Those things are glossed over and I really wish they hadn't been. I was really starting to get into that half of the book and then it was just over.
* Guthrie. This ties in mostly with the above bullet point because I felt that Guthrie didn't live up to his maximum potential. He was definitely a driving character in this book and seemed to have wide-reaching powers. But we never really got to see those powers. Nor did we get to learn what he wanted. We know he wanted Stormy, but why? What was he going to do with her powers and her once he got her? I want to know more about him and what lead him down this path. How did he find magic etc. For such a central character I just didn't feel he was as fleshed out as I wanted him to be. I want to know my villains' motivation!
I would very much recommend this book! And I look forward to reading more from Lillah Lawson. Perhaps Kim is going to make a comeback? Or maybe Jason? Either way I hope that we get more along the lines of Dead Rockstar!

This was an interesting book to listen to - an interesting premise. Can you imagine if you could bring an artist back to life based on something hidden that only you can figure out. It reminded me of one of my music classes where the teacher brought up that if we listened to a Beatles song backwards, we would hear a hidden message.

One issue I had was that Stormy is a divorcee that seemed to be looking for a hidden message that she knew about. I actually wanted more of Phillip and hear his thoughts on how his life changed. Another issue I had was how quickly he seemed to accept how the world had changed. It seemed like we came on the scene in the middle of things. We’re left wanting to know what we missed.

When listening to Ms. Foley, it seemed as if our main character was being dumbed down. I usually like to listen to the speed of the story as it is sent – 1.00x. But with the way Stormy was coming across, I almost felt like the speed should be increased hoping that would change. It was like she had to make things simple for the reader to understand what is going on.

This is one case where I’ll have to read the book. The narration did nothing for me. No disrespect to our narrator and I did go out and see what else she has narrated and didn’t get that same impression. Maybe we just interpret the character differently. For the author, I would like to see what else she has out there. Especially when I found out that there’s a sequel to this book.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

This book reminded me a bit of Kelley Armstrong's and Kim Harrison’s Urban Fantasy series.

This was the right book at the right time. Dead Rockstar is a mix of Urban Fantasy, Romance, with a bit of Mystery sprinkled in. To say this book takes you on a wild ride would be an understatement.

Stormy just split up with her dumbass husband and now spends her life sipping wine and getting an ear full from her best friend about the state of her life. So it’s no surprise that her drunken self decides to try a spell that “accidentally” brings back her favorite music star. Too bad that the spell unleashes a bunch of uncomfortable situations with not-so-nice people.

I really enjoyed following Stormy on her journey as she discovers why her spell was working, what the problem of all these creepy people is, and how her magic worked. The writing was rather engaging and I felt myself not being able to stop because I wanted to know what was going on. The author definitely knows how to reveal things slowly.

The reason for four vs five stars is that the book could have been a bit shorter. Some scenes took a bit too long. And there were some minor story inconsistencies(i.e., when Philip tells Sloan the fake story of him being there, Sloan should have caught on to the age difference). But besides that, I loved this book and can’t wait for book two!

Thanks to Parliament Books for sending me a copy of this book!!!

There are two things everyone should know about Stormy. She’s not over her divorce, and she’s obsessed with her favorite band, the Bloomer Demons. Their frontman, Phillip, committed suicide over two decades ago. But he left some clues in his album, clues to resurrect him from the dead. But surely it’s just a joke, there’s no such thing as necromancy. But on one drunken night, she performs the ritual as a joke, of course. But that spell has consequences she could never imagine.

There were a few technical issues I had with the book, such as Stormy’s divorce timeline. No one can get a divorce in just a few months after separation, it doesn’t work that way. The fact they were joking about resurrecting Steven Tyler, who is most definitely not dead unless he is in this world? There were a few other minor issues that, with some editing, could be easily fixed. When I look past those minor issues, this was a fun and cute read. I liked the storyline; the characters were good. Even Sloan, who was a terrible friend, was a well-written terrible friend. Stormy forgave her way too much, and I would like to picture in her new life, that friendship falls by the wayside. Overall, an enjoyable read.

This is the first book I have listened to by the author and it would have been better reading the actual book. The storyline itself is interesting but gets lost as one tries to glean everything taking place from the audio version. The main character, Stormy Spooner, is likeable in a quirky kind of way with a strong will. As her life is crumbling, she attempts to bring dead rockstar, Phillip, back from the dead; never in a million years did she think it would actually work. However, when it does, the two are off on an adventure trying to deal with the people they come into contact with and doing their best to avoid difficulties. Ms. Foley is a new narrator to me and her narration was a challenge to get through. The voice used to convey the characters was at times robotic and the pitch was not pleasing to the ear. The articulation of the narration was well done but would have been better if it had been read a little faster with an injection of liveliness. I plan to go back and read a copy of this book.

When Stormy decides to do a spell on a record album in a drunken haze,s he has no idea what she’s doing. She never expected the enigmatic rock star heartthrob, Phillip Deville, who had been dead for 20 years, to show up at her door.

What starts as a fun and sexy romp with an amateur necromancer and her hot undead rocker boyfriend turns into a much darker game as they delve deeper into the magic behind the spell. The plot is smart, twisty, fast-paced, and beautifully unpredictable. Stormy and Phillip’s chemistry is undeniable and things definitely heat up.

What I love the most about this book is how fresh and modern the writing is. Stormy is a vegan librarian who drinks on weekends with her BFF. She and her friend talk like real people and it doesn’t feel forced. Author Lilah Lawson has a quick and admirable style with witty dialogue and a pair of heroes who are to die for.

I’m excitedly anticipating the sequel!

3.5 stars when taking into mind both the writing and the narration.
I didn't fall in love with this story or its characters but it is an entertaining premise and I did enjoy the story and it felt quirky which was a positive for me.
The plot is well paced mostly, though some aspects felt slow at times, on the whole, the plot flowed well and was engaging and entertaining.
The characters feel like plenty of thought went into them and those personalities came across well in the story.
For me the narration didn't work well. At times it sounded robotic and quiet one note. there were distinctions between the characters that were well done and the narration was clearly spoken but I had to almost double the speed for the story to draw me in and at that speed the speech was still very clear. I feel that the story could have been read faster and had more energy which would have worked better for the plot.

Fun, Adventure, Witchcraft, and the Sexiest Man Unalive!
I loved meeting Stormy Spooner and the people in her life, then zooming off on a wacky roadtrip to solve a mystery. Stormy is a strong-willed, badass chick--my kind of gal. Of course she falls in love with tall hunk Phillip! Who wouldn't? Those muscles and green eyes and...stamina! Yes, please! ;) We learn about Stormy as she grows and learns about herself and her unexpectedly witchy ways. It kept me turning pages to find out what was next. That's why I can't wait for the sequel. (Also vegan food porn. Who knew?)

3.5 ☆ The premise of the book was so interesting: what if you could resurrect your favorite singer? But the development of the story was very uneven, the first part dragged and the second part better. I like annoying female characters, but Stormy is uncharismatic and boring, however I liked Philip, even though I thought he was too much a nice guy to someone who has already been a rock star in other life. I would like the book to focus more on the psychological aspects of having a second chance in life.
It lacked a little more drugs, sex and rock n roll

Ever wondered what the lovechild of 'The Crow' and 'Queen of the Damned' would sound like?
Lillah Lawson's "Dead Rockstar" encapsulates those stories and more.
I know it sounds cliché but I truly could not put this book down. I can't wait to hear some more from Stormy and Phillip.
My only critique is that I wish Bloomer Demons weren't fictitious so I could really hear THE song "Bring Me Back".

A die-hard Bloomer Demons superfan, Stormy Spooner indulges too heavily in a bottle of wine and the spell that she found on a collector's album one night and ends up bringing her long-dead groupie crush, Phillip Deville, to life. This is every girl's dream fantasy, except when it's not. There's a sinister group of characters that are out to find the resurrected Phillip, or maybe it's not him they want...

I enjoyed this '90s nostalgic Dark tale by Lillah Lawson. Dead Rockstar was plain fun to read, and the crew out to find Phillip kept me going wondering what they were up to. This book is an awesome combination of 90's music/nostalgia, dark magic, and romance with a high heat level. I might classify it as a dark or paranormal romance, but it's so much more. The musical walk down memory lane really adds a great element to this story. Were the 90s that long ago that we have to remember them? Yikes, I guess they were! Really enjoyable read. I recommend it!

Sometimes you’ve just gotta do a little witchcraft (as a joke!) and bring back the dead rockstar your were in love with as a teen. You know… as a treat.

The story of Stormy and Phillip is at times exciting, funny, sweet, charming, and deeply real as this isn’t just a book about their romance and accidental necromancy. No, it’s also a book about a woman who lost everything, and was thrust into a depression because of it, finding herself again, relearning who she is, and yeah also getting to sleep with the sexy (un)dead rockstar.

This book is for the fangirl in all of us who really wishes we could cast a love spell on that movie star or bring back the rock legend we fell in love with in our youth.

Opinions: Even before beginning Dead Rockstar, I knew it would be a spectacular read for three reasons.
1. That cover! You're only allowed to judge a book by its cover when it's a beautiful one.
2. I've yet to read a bad book by Parliament House Publishing!
3. The blurb! Every fanfiction, every dream, and every middle school "kiss, kill, or marry" game was bound to come true.
And spectacular it was. Each page was more enthralling than the last, romance and distress oozing from the book as it kept me and doubtlessly many other readers up all night long. I could not set this gem down! Stormy Spooner was a compelling, likable protagonist that I couldn't have bonded with faster. I've never quite felt jealous for a protagonist, but what I would give to incarnate a dreamy celebrity as my friend! However, I found it difficult to sympathize with Stormy because too much of the book seemed plausible only due to plot convenience. For instance, readers are explicitly told that she is careening towards bitter after her divorce, yet a few months and a new boyfriend is all it takes for Stormy to forget such "nasty" baggage. For me, a lack of connection to the characters was the only flaw in this intimate, engrossing tale that left readers with a sense of closure from their high school fantasies and some things to think about next time they make a wish! All in all, Dead Rockstar is in the running for my list of all-time favourite books and can easily be number one on yours.
