Excellent thread, not least for reminding us that "bionic duckweed" should be a universally understood term of art in innovation policy. If electric trains/trams had only just been invented, we'd be rushing to implement this great novel decarbonisation technology.

This is why I'm not convinced by the new species of bionic duckweed that says that electric bikes will mean cities don't need public transport. twitter.com/thomasforth/status/1586284606910783488/photo/1

Really important thread and report on the role of R&D tax credits in the UK's R&D landscape

Tweet Nov 14, 2022
R&D spending must not be cut in the Autumn Statement or there is a risk of limiting economic growth. 🚨 Instead the Government should reduce complexity and tackle fraud to make the system work better. www.ukonward.com/reports/incentivising-innovatio

V good thread on the important role universities can play in attracting high quality foreign direct investment into their cities and regions, supporting their own R&D, and strengthening wider innovation ecosystems.

Very interesting thread (especially to me, as, many years ago, I did a PhD about PVC and the diffusion of (non-phthalate) plasticisers therein). Perhaps of interest to @pvcryan …

🧵 Here's a story about how we filled (and continue to fill) the world with a plastic everyone knows is harmful. - It's a story of the "plastic industrial complex". - Of the underbelly of the economy -Of the hidden role table salt(!) still plays in th

A very good thread & blogpost from @bridges_tom on how city regions could use "Investment Zones" & "Innovation Accelerators" as part of a coherent plan to support inclusive economic growth. A start to turning "levelling up" from slogan to substance.

I enjoyed this evening's @ukonward event on industrial strategy, a lot of consensus amongst the panel on (a) the need for industrial strategy, and (b) some of the necessary ingredients for the situation the UK finds itself in. This is a good summary thread...

Great event on how the UK is approaching the question of industrial policy in the age of great power competition. The challenges ahead are pretty huge. Interesting to contrast with what’s happening in Brussels. Some thoughts: twitter.com/Valen10Fra

Good that there was so much consensus at this @ukonward event last night on the need for the UK to be serious about industrial strategy, and quite a lot of agreement about some necessary ingredients. Here's a good thread summarising the proceedings...

An interesting thread on the semiconductor strategy from @ProfRachelGaN - but it does emphasise that this is really science policy rather than industrial strategy (the former, of course, being much cheaper than the latter).

Yesterday, the government published their new semiconductor strategy. Hear more about it on #TheContextBBC: the item starts at 49 minutes and includes an interview with me: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001m5hv/the-context-19052023 twitter.com/SciTe
